Retreat group watching the sunset on the beach at Trópico Latino in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica
If you’re a yoga teacher, wellness instructor, surf coach, or group leader looking for a place to host your next retreat, Santa Teresa should be on your list. And within Santa Teresa, Trópico Latino is one of the few properties that’s actually set up for it.
This isn’t a generic resort that occasionally takes groups. The hotel has a dedicated retreat structure, on-site wellness support, beachfront access, and the kind of laid-back Costa Rican energy that makes people want to stay longer than planned.
Santa Teresa sits on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula — one of the few Blue Zones in the world, recognized for the lifestyle and longevity of people who live there. The environment naturally supports what most retreat leaders are trying to create: slower mornings, time in nature, good food, and space to disconnect.
The town is small but functional. There’s a main road with local restaurants, surf shops, and markets. It’s not isolated, but it’s not overstimulating either. Participants can explore on their own or stay on property — both work.

Trópico Latino is a beachfront hotel with 20 rooms across different accommodation types — garden rooms, bungalows, and beachfront options. Groups can range from 10 to 43 people, with flexibility for couples or participants willing to share.
The hotel sits directly on Playa Carmen, one of the most active and accessible beaches in Santa Teresa. You walk out the door and you’re on the sand. For surf retreats, that means lessons happen steps from where participants are sleeping. For yoga retreats, early morning beach sessions are easy to organize without transportation logistics.
What the retreat package typically includes:
– Discounted group accommodation rates
– A full meal plan with breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared daily at Shambala Restaurant
– Access to the on-site yoga studio with full props
– Discounted group rates for surf lessons and massage services
– An on-site group coordinator who manages logistics, requests, and details throughout the stay
– Special benefits for the retreat leader or instructor
– Social media and website promotion (if the group opts in)
The hotel works in partnership with Natural Integrative Wellness, which brings professional wellness programming directly to the property — yoga, bodywork, and integrative practices that complement both surf and wellness retreat formats.
Retreat leaders don’t have to import everything from outside. The foundation is already there. Leaders bring their own curriculum and teaching style; the support structure is in place.

For retreat groups, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily at Shambala Restaurant. The kitchen works with fresh, locally sourced ingredients — many from the hotel’s own organic garden. Our Chef leads the kitchen with a focus on food that works for people who are active during their retreat. Prepared meals, not buffet volume.
Having meals on property removes one of the biggest logistical headaches of running a group program. Participants eat together at the hotel without coordinating reservations or managing dietary needs across different restaurants.
Santa Teresa is one of the best beginner-to-intermediate surf destinations in Costa Rica. The waves at Playa Carmen are consistent, the beach break is forgiving, and the water is warm year-round.
For surf or mixed surf-and-yoga programs, the hotel coordinates group surf lessons directly on the beach in front of the property. Group rates are included in the retreat package. For participants who already surf, the area has multiple breaks within easy reach for different levels.

Trópico Latino has hosted a range of group formats. The property works well for:
-Surf and yoga retreats — the most common format, combining morning surf lessons with yoga sessions and free afternoons
-Wellness and detox retreats — focused on movement, rest, whole food, and guided wellness programming
-Women’s retreats — small to mid-size groups with a mix of beach, yoga, and personal time
– Mother/daughter retreats — the beachfront setting and combination of activities works naturally for multigenerational groups
-Yoga teacher trainings — longer format stays that use the yoga studio and meal plan extensively
-Corporate or team wellness retreats — groups looking for a structured but informal setting outside a traditional conference environment

Contact the hotel with your preferred dates, group size, and retreat type. The team confirms availability, walks you through accommodation options, and puts together a package. A deposit locks in your dates, with payments structured in stages before arrival.
For retreat leaders: Groups booking 8 to 14 rooms receive a discounted rate on the leader’s accommodation. Groups booking 15 to 20 rooms receive complimentary accommodation for the leader for the duration of the retreat.
Note: 13% tax is not included in room rates. The hotel processes all payments through the retreat leader — participants pay the leader, who pays the hotel.
Getting there. Most participants fly into San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR) and travel by ferry, shuttle, or domestic flight. Total travel time from San José is typically 4–5 hours. Worth communicating this to your group in advance.
Best time of year. High season (December–April) brings dry weather and higher demand. Green season (May–November) brings lower prices, fewer outside visitors, and for many leaders, a more focused group dynamic.

Reach out to the team at Trópico Latino with your dates, group size, and what you’re looking to build. The earlier you contact them, the more flexibility you’ll have on accommodation configuration and scheduling.
